Begin with species and place checks
Bird hunting is governed by the NPWS Open Seasons Order, which specifies species, dates and places. The current order is more precise than a general “bird season”: different species have different entries, and some place restrictions apply. NPWS also lists 68 wildfowl sanctuaries where shooting game birds is not allowed.
A guide should identify the exact proposed species and ground before taking a deposit. Hunting.ie does not verify land authority, sanctuary boundaries, bird numbers or conservation conditions.
Bird hunting trip checklist
Before booking, ask the guide to confirm the species being targeted, the ground type, likely walking difficulty, whether dogs are provided, what cartridges or loan guns are available, and what visitor firearms paperwork is needed. What to Expect
Ask the operator to describe the terrain, walking difficulty, group size, dog arrangements, safety briefing, weather cancellation policy and how a decision not to shoot will be handled. No ethical operator should guarantee a bag or a number of birds.
Why the exact ground matters
The Open Seasons Order is not merely a calendar. Its table includes a “places in the State” column, and NPWS separately identifies wildfowl sanctuaries excluded from game-bird shooting. A county-level description is not enough to establish that an outing is permitted. Ask the operator for the precise proposed ground and how it has checked the relevant place restrictions.
Ground also determines the practical plan. Wet bog, woodland and rough cover can create different walking, visibility and weather risks. Ask for an honest description of distance, pace, footwear, obstacles, transport between areas and the point at which weather or conditions cancel the activity.
Questions to put in writing
- Which species is the proposed day intended to target?
- What are the exact date and ground, and who holds the authority to use that ground?
- Has the operator checked the current NPWS place entry and sanctuary exclusions?
- What firearm-certificate route applies to each participant?
- What insurance applies, and what evidence can the operator provide?
- What are the total price, deposit, cancellation and weather terms?
- Are dogs, transport, accommodation or equipment included, or only mentioned as possibilities?
Keep the operator's response with the quote. It helps distinguish an actual offer from generic promotional copy.
